Boy dies in 'dozer accident
A 7-year-old boy died Wednesday from injuries he suffered after he was accidentally buried at a construction site by a bulldozer. Whitland Bruce Cluff was playing with two other children last Tuesday night on family property near 3500 E. 1500 South, according to Uintah County Sheriff's Cpl. Brian Fletcher. A relative operating a bulldozer with a 4-foot-tall blade to level dirt at the site accidentally buried Cluff and the two other boys, Fletcher said. "There was plenty of family there, and the kids had been told to stay out of the way of the equipment," Fletcher said. The two older boys were able to dig themselves out of the dirt and alert the bulldozer driver about what had happened. Fletcher said an effort to locate Cluff was made before sheriff's deputies and Naples police officers were called to the scene. A sheriff's deputy found Cluff under 18 to 24 inches of dirt. Fletcher said it's believed that the boy had been buried for up to 15 minutes when he was located. Cluff was taken to Ashley Regional Medical Center in critical condition. He was later flown to Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City where he died early Wednesday morning. A family member told several media outlets that the bulldozer was being driven by Cluff's father at the time of the mishap. Fletcher declined to confirm that information. "It was just a tragic, tragic accident," he said, adding that no criminal charges will be filed against the heavy equipment operator.
