CATS TIED FOR 1ST
Union Lady Cougars hand Wasatch Wasps first loss
The Union Lady Cats improved their record to 17-1 and gained revenge for their only loss of the season when they knocked off the Wasatch Wasps in Heber City 48-41 on Friday in Heber City. The win gives Union revenge for a 41-40 loss to Wasatch in Roosevelt last month. Wasatch beat Union's boys 56-42. Union will play Park City on Tuesday and will host Carbon on Friday. Back in January Wasatch missed nine out of 10 free throws in the final quarter with the only one they made by McKell Oldham in the final seconds giving them a one-point win. Union missed a shot at the buzzer to lose the game. The Cats outscored WHS 14-5 in the fourth quarter. WHS led 11-9 after one, but Union came back with a 10-7 run to take a 19-18 halftime lead. Union outscored WHS 18-14 for a 37-32 third quarter edge and added 11 more for a seven-point win. WHS was held to only nine points in the final quarter. “Our team defense was the biggest key to the win. We played a 'man-to-man' on them. Our girls executed to near perfection what we had worked on in practice,” said Union Coach Keith Morris. Katie Richens was the best Cat at 18 and Sarah John added 12. Also scoring for Union were: Alexis Benson, 6; Brianna Nielsen, 5; Meadow Simkins, 4 and Majen Mansfield, 3. Union tossed in 17 field goals and was 12 for 22 at the foul line. “Wasatch had a little lead in the first quarter. We didn't have a big lead, but were in control,” said Coach Morris. “Katie hit some buckets for us and led us with 18. When you play a good team such as Wasatch any bucket is a big one.” Natalie Pennington fired in 13 for WHS and Jordyn Richardson added 10. WHS hit 12 field goals and was 13 for 20 at the free throw lane. Union's boys and WHS were tied at 14-14 after one and WHS used a 14-7 run to take a 32-21 halftime lead. Union outscored WHS 15-14, but were still behind 46-36. Wasatch won by 14 counters. The Cats hit 17 field goals and tossed in 3 out of 5 free throws. Colton Jacobson led Union with 18 and Braxten Nielsen pumped in 10. Also scoring for Union were: Brandon Lamb, 6; Spencer Ross, 4; Paul Nelson, Dylan Braithwaite, 2. Mike Brown led WHS with 22 and Trevor Bamgartner added 20. The Wasps popped in 18 field goals and were 14 for 25 in free throws.
