A Roosevelt woman has been charged with causing the death of her 2-month-old daughter.

Samantha Lynn Gilley, 20, was charged late Wednesday in 8th District Court with one count of child abuse homicide, a first-degree felony.

Gilley is accused of inflicting fatal brain injuries on her daughter, Riyln Paige.

The infant was not breathing when Gilley brought her to Uintah Basin Medical Center shortly before noon on Feb. 28, according to Roosevelt police detective Allan Tucker. Doctors were able to revive the baby and stabilized her before sending her to Primary Children's Medical Center.

Doctors at both hospitals suspected that the baby's injuries were the result of abuse, Tucker said.

“The concern for inflicted head trauma in this patient is quite high,” the detective said, reading from a report provided to police by the staff at Primary Children's.

The infant had hemorrhaging of the brain and retinas consistent with the infant being violently shaken, doctors told police.

Riyln Paige Gilley was removed from life support March 5 and died a short time later, Tucker said. Her mother and extended family have been cooperative with police, the detective said, agreeing to multiple interviews.

Based in part on that cooperation, Samantha Gilley has not been arrested. She is expected to be issued a summons to appear in court later this month.
