Tabiona High holds Dutch oven contest
Nancy Spurlock, Uintah Basin Standard

Students at Tabiona School recently participated in a Dutch oven cook-off.

NaDean Lewis, the school's consumer technology education and family consumer science teacher, held the contest at Tabiona in May after one of her students place second in an International Dutch Oven Society contest.

IDOS is a nonprofit organization that seeks to preserve and promote the skills and art of Dutch oven cooking. Tabiona junior and Fruitland resident Kenny Ludwig took second place in an IDOS event in April with his beef enchilada and spiced apple pear pie dishes.

“I gave him the opportunity to participate,” Lewis said. “He could choose the recipes for himself. He had a partner, but the partner couldn't go at the last minute. So, he had to do it all by himself.”

Following Ludwig's success, Lewis decided to hold a contest for her eighth through 12th grade students.

“They had to prepare a main dish and either a dessert or a sidedish using the Dutch oven and the coals,” she said.

The cook-off was held outside by the bus garage and was judged by the school's kitchen staff. Lewis said she couldn't have done it without her parent helpers or donations.

“Al's Food Town donated the charcoal briquettes,” Lewis said. “Both Stewart's Market in Roosevelt and Colleen Sloan from Log Cabin Grub in Sandy donated money and prizes.”

Participants included: Brett Bratcher and Tim Mackert with a Louisiana hot wings and cherry pie; Cameron VanTassell and Floren Redmiles with barbecue chicken and hot fudge cake; Gena Givens and Aisha Giles with Jose's lasagna and pineapple upside down cake; Wade Brown and James Hamilton with vegetable stir fry, sweet and sour chicken, and Mississippi mud cake; Jasmine Jones, Char Strebel and Ali Blanchard with barbecue ribs, diced potatoes, and peach cobbler; Draven Monte' and Monte Clyde with sloppy Joe biscuit bake and brownies; Tyrel Curry and Stetson Hogan with cowboy potatoes and never-fail brownies; and Kenny Ludwig and Calista Anderson with the prize-winning recipe from the IDOS contest.

Katie Weaver baked the rolls to go with all the meals.

Eighth grader Bonnie Walton was the overall winner with chicken cordon bleu with sauce and a pineapple upside down cake.

“The students sold tickets to the parents and some of them came and bought dinner,” Lewis said. “All the food was delicious and the judges had a hard time deciding. They did a really good job on it. This is going to be an annual event.”
