UTAH SUMMER GAMES
Basin Boys from Duchesne collect bronze hoop medals
The Grants from Duchesne simply love to play and watch basketball as seven Grants played on a team that competed at a Utah Summer Games Tournament in Cedar City, June 18-20. They placed third for the bronze medal with a 5-2 record. The squad took part in the Men's Open Non-Collegiate 18+ division. Grants on the Duchesne team that went by the name, Basin Boys are: Kirk, Dustin, Mitch, Kyle, Quint, Donny and Dennis Grant. Kirk, Dustin, Mitch, Kyle and Donny are brothers, and Dennis is their father. Quint Grant is a cousin to the other Grants. The only “non-Grant” on the squad was Thiess Lindsay, who was the 'big man' on the team. The Grants in the past have been guards with a few small forwards, but no center-types. Kirk, Dustin, Mitch, Kyle and Donny's mother, Monica Grant was in attendance as well as grand parents, Lloyd and Morna Grant plus their great aunt Carol and her husband Lamar Thomas (Carol is Lloyd's sister). All the players are Duchesne High School graduates and former Eagle hoopsters. The Basin Boys opened the tournament by toppling Mame's Fam from Orem, 70-65 on Thursday, June 18 and edged Who's Next, 70-62 plus fried the Lady Hens, 72-45, June 19. The Basin Boys dropped a 62-56 game to Show Time (third game in one day on June 19). Who's Next from Midvale went on to win the tournament and Wastlund Woodworks Inc. from St. George was second. The Basin Boys won two out of three games on June 20 in its third place finish. The Basin Boys were one of 20 teams in their division with a small-sized team that was impressive with a bronze medal ending. “Lindsay was good for our team down low vs our first day opponent. The whole team played super, ” stated Kirk Grant. “We hit a lot of threes vs. Who's Next and Thiess played well. It was an easy win vs. the Lady Hens. The scoring was pretty even. Because of the Grants' lack of height we hustle all the time by going after the ball.” Who's Next beat Show Time 71-46, Mame's Fam, 61-58; sizzled the Lady Hens, 106-56 plus lost to the Basin Boys, 70-62 in the first two days of the meet. Wastlund Woodworks Inc. lost to the Cougars, 74-68, and beat CEI, 77-63; Untouchables, 79-49 and Marchant Madness, 83-66.
