Union Cats defeat ALA at Region 10 mat meet
Union defeated American Leadership Academy and lost to the Park City Miners 54-28 at the Region 10 Meet that was held in Roosevelt on Wednesday, Jan. 27. The Cats also competed against and lost to Wasatch and Carbon. The Wasps placed first and Carbon second. Park City was third and Union fourth. ALA placed fifth. Anthony Small, 135, and Cassidy Farnsworth, 145, won titles for the Cougars and Union's Josh Frost, 103, and Allen Hamblin, 152, earned seconds. Chad Malnar, 125; Cole Martin, 160, and Gerald Ross, heavyweight, placed third. Taking fourth places were: Randon Taylor, 112; Weston Moon, 119; Colden Nielsen, 130; Mason Powell, 140, and Zach Percival, 189. Wasatch pocketed seven first places and five seconds. Carbon won three firsts and four seconds. The Super Regionals will be held at Ben Lomond High School on Friday and Saturday with the 3-A state meet at Utah Valley State University. The match vs. Park City was held in the afternoon. Other bouts involving teams from Wasatch, Carbon, Union, Park City and ALA were held in the evening. The Cougars' 103 pound freshman Frost pinned his Miner opponent in the second round after he had jumped out to a 7-0 first round lead on a takedown and two near falls. Union's Taylor, 112, and Moon, 119, lost matches to Miner tusslers. Union's 125 pounder Malnar won on a fall over a Park City wrestler. Cougar 130 pounder Nielsen was pinned in the second round vs. a Park City foe. The Miner matman gained four takedowns in the first round for an 8-3 edge. He gave up three escapes to Nielsen and the act paid off for takedowns. Small, 135, Union, clobbered his Miner opponent for two takedowns and a near fall to lead 6-1 before he netted a first round fall with only seconds remaining. Union's Powell, 140, lost on a pin. Farnsworth, 145, got Union High School back on track with a first round pin vs. a Park City Miner. Farnsworth grabbed an 11-0 lead on a takedown and three near falls in the first round Allen Hamblin, 152, won a 12-3 match over a Miner wrestler. Hamblin led 5-0 after one round on a takedown and near fall. He added a takedown for a 7-1 edge in the second round. Hamblin bagged two reversals and gave up a reversal to his Park City opponent, but ended up winning by nine counters. The next three Cougars, Martin, 160; Percival, 171 and Ross, heavyweight, lost on falls to Park City Miners. Ross scored a takedown and near fall for a 5-0 lead before he lost to a Park City Miner. Union won all its matches vs. American Leadership Academy except for the 189 and 215 pound weight contests. Other Region 10 champs are: 103 – Bradley Garritt, Wasatch; 112 – Jackman Bryce, Carbon; 119 – Robby Miner, Wasatch; 125 – Jake Fassold, Wasatch; 130 – Wyatt Martinez, Carbon; 140 – Cole Hunt,Carbon; 152 – Teddy Hackford, Wasatch; 160 – Chris Horton, Wasatch; 171 – Skyler Barkdull, Park City; 189 – Kaleb Moritz, Wasatch; 215, Tyson Kohler, Wasatch, and heavyweight – Cash Knight, Park City.
