Voting going to mail in for 2012
You won’t have to hunt any further than your mail box to find your polling place to vote in this year’s upcoming primaries and elections.
In action taken at the regularly scheduled Duchesne County Commission last Monday, the Commission unanimously approved the ordinance establishing mail in balloting as the official voting system for Duchesne County.
Duchesne County Chief Deputy Clerk JoAnn Evans reported that the state legislature actually changed the language of the redistricting law to amend some of the boundaries in the county so that there were not precincts left standing with only three residences in them.
“Some of the precincts that have been established are not contiguous,” Evans said. “We had some proposed precincts with only a few houses in them. They have been combined with other areas, because we found out the areas do not have to touch to be in the same precinct.”
The county had 25 precincts. As a result of redistricting, Duchesne County now has 30 precincts. Mailed out ballots will automatically place voters in the correct precinct by address. Ballots will be mailed to voters about 6 weeks ahead of elections and must be mailed or returned prior to election day. “It is really important to all voters to re-register, even if they have lived in the same place for years,” Evans said. “The only way we can be certain of a voter’s precinct is to have a signed and updated voter registration form from every voter.”
Forms are available at the county courthouse, many city offices, the county library, the chamber of commerce, school district offices, and at the offices of the Uintah Basin Standard.
Questions should be directed to the Duchesne County Courthouse, office of the Chief Deputy Clerk, 435-738-1228.
