Jhéné Aiko's fourth studio album, "Westside Whimsy," debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 this week, the first time in her career the singer has topped the chart.
The album, released September 11 through Def Jam Recordings and ArtClub International, opened with roughly 74,000 album-equivalent units, enough to claim the top spot on both the all-genre chart and the R&B albums chart simultaneously, according to Billboard. It is the first R&B album by a woman to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 this year, and the first album of any genre to do so since SZA's "SOS" completed a thirteen-week run atop the chart in May 2025.
A homecoming, six years on
"Westside Whimsy" arrives six years after "Chilombo," the 2020 album that earned Aiko nominations for Album of the Year and Best Progressive R&B Album at the Grammys. Where that record reached for scale, the new twenty-track project turns inward, built around coastline imagery, late-night conversations and songs about setting boundaries in relationships. Guests are drawn almost entirely from Los Angeles's musical orbit: Ab-Soul, Tyga, Larry June and the singer OHMA, plus Kendrick Lamar on the track "So Good," which reunites the two more than a decade after they first worked together on Lamar's 2010 mixtape "Overly Dedicated" and Aiko's 2013 EP "Sail Out."
Critical response has been positive but measured. Writing for Respect My Region, critic Joseph Brabo called it "a good Jhéné Aiko album" that reconnects the singer with her Los Angeles roots and her gift for intimate songwriting, while cautioning that the project "mistakes consistency for progression."
Aiko marked the chart debut on Instagram, addressing fans directly.

The milestone caps a strong run for women in R&B on the Billboard 200 this year and gives Aiko, who has spent much of the past half-decade on independent releases and lower-key projects, her biggest commercial week to date. "Chilombo" peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in 2020, meaning this week's debut is a milestone Aiko had not previously reached across a recording career that began with her 2011 mixtape "Sailing Soul(s)." No tour dates have been announced.
