"The Diplomat" returned to Netflix on Thursday for its fourth season, picking up immediately after a season-three finale that left Ambassador Kate Wyler facing the possibility that her husband and the sitting president had secretly made off with a Russian nuclear weapon.
Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell reprise their roles as Kate and Hal Wyler, now vice president, while Allison Janney returns as President Grace Penn. Janney, Bradley Whitford — who plays Grace's husband, Todd — and Nana Mensah, as White House chief of staff Billie Appiah, have all been elevated to series regulars for the new season, according to Netflix's Tudum. Ali Ahn, David Gyasi and Aidan Turner also return.
Picking up a doomsday-weapon cliffhanger
Season three ended with the discovery of a Russian submarine carrying a Poseidon torpedo — described in the show as a "doomsday weapon" — off the English coast, followed by the weapon's disappearance and Kate's dawning suspicion that Grace and Hal had taken it themselves. Netflix's official synopsis for the new season says the fallout from "one catastrophic event" now threatens both the fragile US-UK peace Kate brokered and her own marriage, as Kate and Todd form an uneasy alliance to rein in their spouses.
The political drama, created by Debora Cahn, has built a reputation as one of Netflix's more durable prestige hits since its 2023 debut, earning three Emmy nominations for Russell's performance as Kate. Janney won her eighth Emmy, for outstanding supporting actress in a drama series, at the September 2026 ceremony for her work as Grace — a win that tied the all-time record for acting victories, shared with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Cloris Leachman and Jean Smart, as Variety reported at the time.
As of Thursday morning, no major outlets had yet published reviews of the eight-episode fourth season, which was released globally in full. A recap published ahead of the premiere noted that season three had been well received by critics, building on a run of positive notices for the series since its launch; whether the fourth season sustains that reception will become clearer as reviews and viewership data emerge over the coming days. Netflix does not typically release detailed viewership figures for individual titles outside its own weekly top-10 rankings.
The streamer has not yet announced whether "The Diplomat" will continue beyond its fourth season.
