Iranian Rowers Zarei and Norouzi Strike Gold at Asian Games Despite Training Turmoil

Iran's Kimia Zarei and Zeinab Norouzi won gold in the women's lightweight double sculls at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, posting a winning time of 6:53.93, according to the Tehran Times.

The numbers

The Iranian pair finished 5.31 seconds ahead of silver medalists Cheung Yuen-shan and Leung Wing-wun of Hong Kong, with Japan's Chika Yonezawa and Chiaka Tomita taking bronze just 0.03 seconds behind Hong Kong — a photo-finish for the minor medals even as Iran pulled away comfortably for gold.

Context

The win was part of a broader breakout for Iranian women's rowing at this year's Games, with the national team claiming two golds and a silver across the women's sculling events, a notable result for a program that has historically lagged behind rowing powerhouses like China and Japan at the continental level.

Reaction

Iranian state broadcast coverage framed the results as a statement of resilience for the women's squad, with athletes describing training disruptions at home over the past year as a backdrop to the competition, per Press TV coverage of the team.

What's next

The rowing program moves on to the remaining sculling and sweep finals later in the Games, with Iranian officials signaling plans to expand funding for women's rowing ahead of the next Asian Games cycle.
