Michael Brennan closed with a 6-under 64 to win the Wyndham Championship on Sunday, finishing at 22-under 258 — tying the tournament record — for a three-shot victory over Beau Hossler at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina. It was Brennan's second PGA Tour title in two seasons, and, more urgently for him, the result that carried him into the FedEx Cup playoffs.
Brennan trailed by a shot at the turn before making five consecutive birdies from the fourth through eighth holes, all from inside eight feet, to build a three-shot cushion. Hossler bogeyed the ninth as his own round unraveled, and Brennan held on from there. The win was worth $1.53 million of the tournament's $8.5 million purse, according to the PGA Tour.
The victory did more than add a trophy. Brennan had entered the week ranked 105th in the FedEx Cup standings, well outside the top 70 that advance to the postseason. The win vaulted him to 47th, securing his spot in Thursday's FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, the first of three playoff events that trim the field toward the season-ending Tour Championship.

Brennan said afterward that he had wanted to earn his way into the postseason outright rather than back into it on points, a distinction that mattered given how his year had gone.
A crowded bubble
Brennan's win reshuffled the bottom of the standings. Jackson Koivun, a 21-year-old Auburn product, held on to the No. 70 and final qualifying spot after shooting 71 on Sunday while watching leaderboards on the back nine, his own postseason fate tied to how the tournament played out ahead of him. Koivun's berth means he has qualified for the FedEx Cup playoffs in just five professional starts, matching a record set by Tiger Woods, a milestone that followed his win at the 3M Open in only his third start as a pro. "Obviously whenever you're in the record books with Tiger it's a good name to get acquainted with," Koivun said, according to the PGA Tour.
Not everyone survived the shakeout. Steven Fisk, who won the ISCO Championship earlier this season, finished at No. 71 and missed the playoffs after closing his campaign with three straight missed cuts. Brooks Koepka, playing his first full season back on the PGA Tour after a run on LIV Golf, needed at least a fourth-place finish at Sedgefield to qualify and fell short.
Brennan's rise
The 24-year-old Virginia native played college golf at Wake Forest, about 30 miles from Sedgefield Country Club, and turned professional in 2024. He earned his first PGA Tour title less than a year ago at the Bank of Utah Championship, winning as a sponsor exemption in just his third career start after coming over from PGA Tour Americas. Sunday's win also earns him a place in next year's Masters.
Brennan's mother met him on the 18th green after the round. By his own account, the stretch leading up to the win had not been smooth. "I don't want to be done playing golf," he said, according to the Associated Press. "Unfortunately, I've had a couple of tough Sundays. This is my sixth week in a row."
The FedEx Cup playoffs begin Thursday at TPC Southwind in Memphis, where the 70-man field — Brennan and Koivun both included — will be trimmed toward the BMW Championship and the season-ending Tour Championship at East Lake.
