How the bracket came together
The Milwaukee Brewers finished 103-59, a franchise record and the best mark in the majors, to claim the NL Central for a fourth straight year and a bye into the NLDS. The Los Angeles Dodgers, seeking an unprecedented third consecutive World Series title, went 100-62 to win the NL West and earn the other NL bye. No team has won three straight championships since the Yankees' run from 1998 to 2000, and the Dodgers already made history last fall by becoming the first repeat champion in a quarter-century.
In the American League, the Tampa Bay Rays went 98-64 to capture the AL East and the league's best record, good for a bye and home-field advantage throughout the AL bracket. The Cleveland Guardians (85-77) took the AL Central for the other bye. The Astros back into the field with an unusual credential: Houston won the AL West at exactly .500, 81-81, one of the weakest records ever to capture a division title, yet still hosts a Wild Card Series as the No. 3 seed.
On the wild-card side, the Yankees (93-68) and Padres (91-71) earned home series as the top wild-card teams in their leagues, while the Red Sox (87-75), Cubs (89-73), White Sox (84-78) and Phillies (88-74) round out the eight-team field as road underdogs.
A familiar October rivalry
Atlanta and Philadelphia meet in the postseason for the third time in five years, with the Braves having taken the regular-season series 9-4 this year. Philadelphia leaned heavily on its rotation down the stretch just to secure the final NL wild card, while Atlanta arrives with a full week of rest. Game 1 pits Sale against a Phillies staff still finalizing its starter between Jesús Luzardo and Andrew Painter, with Tyler Mahle lined up for Atlanta in a potential Game 2.
Tampa Bay's run to the AL's top seed capped a season the club opened outside the postseason picture entirely a year ago, when Hurricane Milton damage forced the Rays to play "home" games at the Yankees' spring training park in Tampa. Third baseman Yandy Díaz, reflecting on the division title that clinched the bye, credited a group that stayed patient through a slow start.

The Rays finished two games behind the Brewers for the best record in baseball, meaning Milwaukee holds home-field advantage throughout the entire postseason should both clubs keep winning.
What happens next
Each Wild Card Series is a best-of-three, with any necessary Game 3 played Thursday at the higher seed's ballpark. The four series winners join the Brewers, Dodgers, Rays and Guardians in the Division Series, which is scheduled to begin this weekend, setting up a five-week road to the World Series in late October.
