AMD closed above $1 trillion in market value for the first time Monday, with shares jumping as much as 10% to a record high near $614 and making the chipmaker the fourth U.S. semiconductor company to cross the threshold.

The stock has gained roughly 30% so far in September alone — its best month since May — and is up more than 180% for the year, according to trading data reported Monday. AMD joins Nvidia, Broadcom and Micron Technology in the $1 trillion club among U.S. chipmakers, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. globally — a group that, worldwide, includes only about 15 other publicly traded companies of any industry.

The immediate spark was Meta's new Muse AI agent, which climbed to the top of the free-app rankings on Apple's App Store following its launch earlier this month. Meta is AMD's second-largest customer, and its shares also surged Monday — more than 7% by some accounts — as investors bet that a hit consumer AI product would translate into heavier demand for the server processors that power it.

Jefferies analyst Jacky He captured the logic driving the rally:

As AI agents gain broader consumer adoption, demand for server CPUs should benefit from higher inference, orchestration, and infrastructure workloads.

A Sector-Wide Surge

AMD's milestone came amid a broader rally across semiconductor stocks. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index climbed more than 4% Monday, its fifth consecutive session of gains, with Intel rising as much as 12% and Arm Holdings gaining as much as 14%. The move reflects investors' continued willingness to bid up any company positioned to benefit from AI infrastructure spending, even as questions persist about how long that spending cycle can run.

AMD still trails Nvidia by a wide margin — Nvidia's market capitalization sits around $5.4 trillion, more than five times AMD's new valuation — but Monday's close marks a symbolic turning point for a company that spent years positioned as the AI market's distant number two. Attention now shifts to AMD's coming earnings and product roadmap, including its next-generation MI-series GPUs, as investors look for evidence that Monday's enthusiasm reflects durable demand rather than a one-day reaction to a single app's App Store ranking.
