Claude Hit by Its Third Significant Outage in a Week, Renewing Questions About Anthropic's Reliability

A roughly three-and-a-half-hour disruption on Monday knocked out several Claude models across chat, coding and API products, the latest in a cluster of incidents this month that has drawn attention to how much businesses now depend on the service.

Anthropic's Claude experienced its most significant outage of the month on Monday, with elevated error rates knocking out access to several models across the company's consumer and developer products for roughly three and a half hours.

According to Anthropic's status page and reporting from Android Authority, engineers began investigating elevated errors in the early hours of Monday morning and identified the models affected as Claude Mythos 5, Claude Fable 5, Claude Opus 5 and Claude Opus 4.8. The disruption hit claude.ai, the Claude API, Claude Code and Claude Cowork, with users reporting login failures and failed requests across web, desktop, mobile and API access throughout the outage window before service was fully restored.

Anthropic's public statement on the incident offered little detail on the underlying cause.

Anthropic, status page update on the August 24 incident

Part of a busier-than-usual month

Monday's outage was not an isolated event. Status-tracking site StatusGator and other outage trackers logged a cluster of separate Claude incidents in the preceding week alone, including API errors on August 17, roughly 17 hours of degraded performance affecting Opus 5 and Haiku 4.5 on August 18, and two shorter incidents involving elevated model errors and Google-connector failures on August 20, according to a tally reported by IBTimes. Taken together, the pattern amounts to well over a dozen separate status-page incidents logged for Claude products across August.

The frequency matters more than it once would have, given how quickly Claude Code and the Claude API have been adopted inside software teams and enterprise workflows since their release. Unlike a chatbot outage, which mostly interrupts individual conversations, an API or Claude Code disruption can halt automated pipelines and coding sessions mid-task, a distinction several outage trackers have highlighted as raising the practical stakes of Anthropic's reliability record.

The incident adds to a broader industry debate about how much operational risk businesses take on by building critical workflows around a single AI provider's infrastructure, as major AI labs and cloud platforms across the sector have faced their own high-profile reliability incidents this year amid surging demand for AI coding and agent tools. For teams that have wired Claude Code or the Claude API directly into production pipelines, even a few hours of elevated errors can cascade into missed deployments and stalled automation.

Anthropic has not said whether it plans to publish a detailed public postmortem for the August 24 incident or for the cluster of outages logged earlier in the month, leaving enterprise customers with limited visibility into whether the disruptions share a common cause. The company's status page showed all affected services back to normal by Monday morning.
