Calley Means, one of the most visible figures in the Make America Healthy Again movement and a senior adviser to Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., resigned from the White House on Thursday, days before the midterm elections.

"I am resigning from the White House with tremendous respect for President Trump and Bobby Kennedy," Means wrote in a social media post, listing policy fights he said he had steered, including dietary guidelines reform, removing soda from SNAP benefits, eliminating food dyes and overhauling government food procurement. His post did not give a reason for leaving.

Frustration with corporate influence

People close to Means said he had grown frustrated that the food industry and other special interests retained too much sway over policy, and that he had raised his voice in recent meetings over stalled progress on priorities such as regulating ultra-processed foods and tightening school meal standards. Other officials reportedly complained that Means was unwilling to make political concessions.

The departure comes amid growing unease within the MAHA movement over Kennedy's handling of its signature issues. A MAHA summit last month drew criticism for accepting corporate sponsorships from companies including Walmart, UnitedHealth, Anthropic and OpenAI, with some packages reportedly costing up to $300,000 — a move grassroots members said betrayed the movement's origins.

Means and his sister, Casey Means, co-authored Good Energy: The Surprising Connection Between Metabolism and Limitless Health, a book that became an informal manifesto for the movement, urging readers to avoid processed foods, seed oils and fluoride, among other recommendations. Trump had nominated Casey Means to be surgeon general, but her nomination was abandoned amid questions over her medical qualifications and vaccine views.

Calley Means is among the movement's earliest organisers, and his exit — less than two weeks before Americans vote in the midterms — adds to questions about whether MAHA's grassroots energy can survive contact with Washington policymaking and industry lobbying.
