Rajinikanth's 'Jailer 2' Opens to Roughly $14 Million Worldwide, Trails His Own 'Coolie' Pace

The Tamil superstar's sequel posted one of the year's biggest openings in Indian cinema, even as it fell short of the record he set with last year's 'Coolie.'

Rajinikanth's "Jailer 2" opened worldwide on Wednesday to roughly ₹125 crore in single-day ticket sales, a haul that instantly made it one of the biggest launches in Tamil-language cinema this year, even as it fell short of the actor's own record set a year earlier.

The sequel to 2023's sleeper hit "Jailer," again directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, pulled in about ₹77.68 crore domestically across its Tamil, Telugu and Hindi dubs by its second day, with its worldwide total racing toward ₹150 crore, according to tracking published by The Week. A crore is 10 million rupees, putting the opening-day gross at roughly $14 million at current exchange rates. Overseas ticket sales alone topped $700,000 and counting, with distributors eyeing one of the biggest international runs yet for a Rajinikanth release.

Measured Against Rajinikanth's Own Bar

The numbers are enormous by any ordinary standard, but inside the superstar's own filmography they read as a partial letdown. The original "Jailer" opened to ₹48.35 crore net in India and ₹96.36 crore worldwide on its first day, a pace the sequel outran comfortably. It still landed behind "Coolie," Rajinikanth's 2025 release, which remains his biggest worldwide opener on a single day, with an Indian net of ₹65 crore. Industry trackers had also flagged softer advance bookings heading into release, and reports pointed to a dispute between the production and major multiplex chains, including PVR INOX, over digital release windows that complicated the film's Hindi-language rollout in northern India.

In North America, where the film opened in roughly 350 locations, premiere-night screenings alone brought in $1.4 million, which trade tracker Koimoi called the fourth-biggest premiere total in Kollywood history in the territory. Distributors had set a North American break-even target of $6.5 million, a figure revised down from an earlier $7 million estimate after advance sales came in softer than for "Coolie" at the same point in the run-up to release.

A Split Verdict From Critics, a Boost From the Score

Reviews have landed in a familiar middle ground for the franchise: enthusiastic about Rajinikanth's screen presence and composer Anirudh Ravichander's score, more skeptical about the plotting. An aggregate tracked by the review site Sacnilk put the film at 63 out of 100 based on eight reviews, with three positive notices and five mixed, none outright negative. The Deccan Herald's review called it an upgrade on the original in energy but faulted its reliance on repetitive slow-motion set pieces, while the Hollywood Reporter India described it as a hilariously dark sequel that ultimately settles for safety in its back half. Audience reaction, per social media sampling by Sacnilk, splits along similar lines: strong reaction to the film's first half, more divided takes on its second.

None of that has dented the film's commercial momentum so far. With its opening weekend now folded into the total, distributors are watching whether word of mouth can sustain the pace through the coming week, when "Jailer 2" will face fresh competition from new regional releases vying for the same screens it has dominated since Wednesday.
