FDA clears the first once-monthly GLP-1 pill

The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved the first once-monthly oral GLP-1 medication for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, a formulation designed to release its active compound gradually over four weeks.

In trials, patients lost an average of 17 percent of body weight over 68 weeks, comparable to weekly injectables, with a similar side-effect profile concentrated in the first two months of treatment.

Analysts expect the convenience advantage to force pricing pressure on the injectable market within a year. The manufacturer said supply at launch will be limited, with full production capacity expected by mid-2027.
