Airbnb Says Its Coming AI Travel Agent Won't Look Like a Chatbot

Buried in its latest earnings letter, Airbnb details a 2027 plan for an "AI-native" trip planner built around maps, calendars and itineraries instead of a chat window.

Airbnb plans to launch an AI agent in the first half of 2027 to help travelers plan and book trips, the company disclosed in its third-quarter 2026 shareholder letter, released Wednesday alongside its latest earnings.

The company is explicitly positioning the tool as something other than a conventional chatbot. "Today's AI agents are good at simple, routine tasks, like making a restaurant reservation or scheduling an appointment," Airbnb wrote. "But planning a trip on Airbnb is different." The company argues its experience matching hosts with guests, its existing role inside millions of bookings, and a purpose-built interface give it an advantage over general-purpose assistants from rivals such as OpenAI and Perplexity, both of which have been racing to build their own AI agents for travel and shopping.

Built around the question, not a chat window

In the letter, reported by The Verge, Airbnb describes the planned agent this way: "We're developing a custom-designed, AI-native experience that builds the interface around your question. Rather than a chat window, our agent draws on a library of hundreds of travel-specific interface elements — maps, photos, comparisons, calendars, itineraries — and composes them in real time to match what you're looking for." The company says the agent will help travelers compare options, decide with the people they're traveling with, and book directly inside Airbnb, rather than simply handing back a list of links.

Airbnb co-founder and chief executive Brian Chesky has previously said the company is working toward a 2027 agent with an interface far more capable than a simple chat window, consistent with the approach detailed in the letter. In the same shareholder letter, Airbnb called AI "the best thing to ever happen to Airbnb," saying it has already reshaped how the company builds products and runs its operations day to day.

The announcement puts a concrete timeline on a strategy Airbnb has been signaling for more than a year, as travel booking increasingly becomes a target for AI agents built by search and chat companies with no hotel or rental inventory of their own. Whether Airbnb's purpose-built interface outperforms a general assistant that can also book flights and restaurants in one place is likely to become clear only once the agent ships next year.
