Volunteers from the Kamphaeng Phet Khao Phap Rescue Association drove out on Oct. 5 after a resident reported a dead stray dog lying motionless in a lane behind Kamphaeng Phet Rajabhat University, in northern Thailand's Kamphaeng Phet province. The dog looked, by every account, gone: no breathing, no response, nothing. The crew lifted it onto their rescue truck to take it away.
About five minutes later, as the vehicle pulled off, the dog opened its eyes, climbed to its feet and looked around. The stunned rescuers stopped and let it down. It trotted off into the neighborhood as if nothing had happened, according to Khaosod English, which was among the first outlets to report the episode.
A video of the moment, filmed on a bystander's phone, spread quickly after it was posted to Facebook with a caption translating roughly to "ghost dog." Chiang Rai Times reported the clip had drawn more than 4 million views within a day.
"Ghost dog returns from the great beyond."

No veterinarian has publicly examined the dog or explained what happened. Online, the theories ran from the medical — a deep, unresponsive sleep, shock or sedation — to the supernatural, with many commenters, per Must Share News, simply joking that the dog was an unusually heavy sleeper.
What is clear is that the rescue association's volunteers, who routinely collect injured and deceased strays around Kamphaeng Phet, had no reason to doubt their first assessment. Stray dogs are common across Thai cities and provinces, and local rescue groups like Khao Phap handle dozens of calls a week, most with far less dramatic endings.
For now, the dog's identity and its health remain unknown. It ran off before anyone could examine it, and no follow-up sighting has been reported.
